‘The Lake at Eventide’ is one of three pieces of art inspired by the dreamscape of The Whistling Isles – an imagined island archipelago in North West Scotland, whose story I share in The Book of the Sea. This piece depicts the fictional island, Eilean Teine.

While developing this ‘new myth’, I began to explore my lived relationship with the Celtic islands, particularly their deep and intimate ties to water.

The sea, together with the voices of the islands’ wildlife, creates a cultural soundtrack woven into song, story and language. The music of the islands shapes feeling and tradition.

In its creation, I layered fragments of paper together to create texture, shaping them according to colour to build a varied landscape of hills, plains, rocks, sand and water. The fence was made with dried reeds. To blend the fragments together, I used acrylic marker and thread. I also used acrylic marker to create the flowers.

The Lake at Eventide was shortlisted for the 2025 Homiens Art Prize.

The Gardener

Mixed Media on Canvas

70cm X 50cm

Royal Ulster Academy

In the creation of ‘The Gardener’, I layered fragments of paper together to create texture, shaping them according to colour to build a varied landscape. While blending different media, a garden scene began to emerge and a story unfold. I feel that this piece is very much about journeys and transformation.

The Lookout

Mixed Media on Board

35cm X 45 cm

The Lookout is inspired by the dreamscape of The Whistling Isles, a made up world that forms part of an ongoing project, whose journey I share in The Book of the Sea. This piece depicts the fictional island, Eilean Nam Bruadar.

The sea, together with the voices of the islands’ wildlife, creates a cultural soundtrack woven into song, story and language. The music of the islands shapes feeling and tradition.

In its creation, I layered fragments of paper together to create texture, shaping them according to colour to create a varied landscape of hills, rocks, sand and sea. The sea was created with recycled plastic, and the path created with sand. The fence was made with dried reeds. To blend the fragments together, I used acrylic marker. The little houses were created with paper fragments and sand. I also used acrylic marker to embellish the gardens and surrounding landscape with flowers.

Cianalas – the deep homesickness expressed through imagery of the sea and distant land, generally attributed to the Outer Hebrides.

Does a landscape summon its stories home? Does an element return to its source over and over?

Perched high in the Galician mountains, the pastoral village of O Cebreiro is the gateway to a dramatic Celtic landscape that stretches to the Atlantic coast.

Fierce Nice Gallery

The creation of this primarily paper mosaic became a quiet pilgrimage – one that tested patience, persistence and a (joyful) willingness to lose myself in its making over what became many months.

The cutting and layering of paper fragments, the blending of discarded images and found objects became part of a larger journey. It unfolded as an evocation of childhood memories bound to a coastline, an exploration of its colours and stories, of the histories that dwell there.

The stones and reeds were gathered from the landscape I sought to re-imagine – fragments of the place itself woven back into its story. Truths surfaced in playful discoveries!

Paper fragments were shaped according to colour to create a varied landscape of hills, plains, rocks and paths. To blend the fragments together, I used acrylic marker. The little houses were created with paper fragments, plaster, thread and reeds. I also used acrylic marker to embellish the gardens and surrounding landscape with flowers.

We are all collections of stories waiting to be told.

Echoes of The Basque Country

Mixed Media on Board

30cm X 20cm

This collage mosaic was inspired by time spent on El Camino de Santiago, where landscapes are layered with story. Paper fragments were shaped according to colour to create a varied landscape of trees, hills and gardens.

The Basque Country is a story keeper, its ancient language safeguarded between rock and sea. History is hidden in the hills.
